Cryptography news and discussions

Cryptography is the art of creating mathematical assurances for who can do what with data, including but not limited to encryption of messages such that only the key-holder can read it. Cryptography lives at an intersection of math and computer science. This subreddit covers the theory and practice of modern and *strong* cryptography, and it is a technical subreddit focused on the algorithms and implementations of cryptography.

Should I move bitcoin from X input address to 1 or X output addresses when making new wallet?

I want to make a new wallet with a new seed phrase because my current 24-word seed phrase has potentially 80 bits of entropy (log2(24!)) instead of 256. I had entered it in shuffled order during standard Trezor recovery, and have since learned how to do it on device with advanced recovery.
I have successfully created my new seed phrase, but am wondering whether I should transfer my bitcoin spread out across X input addresses to X output addresses or 1 output address. Is my understanding right that if I transfer to 1 output address, then the bitcoin that was spread out across the previous X input addresses could be traced together because they now reside in the same location? Because of this, should I transfer to X output addresses (with a 1 to 1 mapping)?

I think there's several 'swap' sites which basically provide you an address to send your input currency to, and then you provide an output address that you own for the output currency. Simpleswap is one that comes to mind. For anonymity, you'd want to use the site over Tor, and only use fresh output addresses that you've never transmitted transactions from before. Once you have your converted currency, you have to be careful about how you send money out from that address to avoid it being correlated with things like your IP address. No account is required for them. These sites work by automatically trading on exchanges on your behalf. So if you send them BTC, they'll convert to ETH (for example, you choose the input/output currencies) and send the output to you. The fee is quite small, basically just enough to trade on whatever exchange they use. They also offer floating-rate and fixed-rate exchange. I'd recommend just using the floating-rate option.

"Did Satoshi really have an bitcoin address?" - how should we treat bare-pubkey P2PK outputs?

What's the genesis address of Bitcoin, which is supposed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto? 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa right?
I'm afraid to say that some Bitcoin Core devs may disagree with that. Probably they would say that "Satoshi did not really had any 'bitcoin address' at all".
Technically there are indeedly several facts which are really not intuitive:
  1. The 50BTC in the genesis block is not spendable. (this is not really related)
  2. Satoshi used bare-pubkey P2PK outputs, which is not same thing with the currently commonly used P2PKH public key hash outputs, let alone SegWit outputs (both bc1-starting P2WPKH addresses or 3-starting P2SH-P2WPKH addresses require the public key to be hashed).
  3. A lot of "ancient" transactions uses such bare-pubkey outputs, which are also uncompressed public keys. (this is not really related either)
However, quite a few things in the bitcoin ecosystem still recognize P2PK outputs as a thing of the same class with P2PKH, including Bitcoin Core itself.
Then guess what? The latest release (0.20.0) of Bitcoin Core has just removed one of the legacy traces of this issue: Pull request #16725: Don't show addresses or P2PK in decoderawtransaction
However it seems that the GUI wallet still hasn't remove similar logics, so that 1-starting P2PKH addresses could still show up if you create a new wallet and then import some ancient pubkeys into it, just like the screenshot posted here.
Block explorers also behave differently on this issue. Blockstream.info won't show corresponding P2PKH address of bare-pubkey P2PK outputs at all, while Blockchain.info would show the full string of 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa.
In my own opinion probably Bitcoin Core is not doing something correct this time. However it's not good to confuse P2PK with P2PKH either.

Bitcoin change output. In Bitcoin and basically many other cryptocurrencies the UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) is indivisible. That is when the output of previous transaction becomes the input of another transaction it needs to be spend in its entirety. It cannot be divided and it is the rule. The Bitcoin protocol only allows you to spend the UTXO in full. This is done primarily for two ... What you mean is – here are previous transactions sent to me that add up to 1 Bitcoin or more.
